Poor Sarah trying to keep up with Jer. His right hand is blazing in foggy mtn. top.
she sounds like mother maybelle carter!
I believe electric guitar in the 50s might have been Jerry's first stringed instrument. I also think it is ONLY Sara on guitar/vocals, plus Jerry here - playing Deep Elem on mandolin (and that elsewhere). Plus this is perhaps the only fiddle by him that I've heard (Keno)! Go see fiddle photo in Shady Grove CD booklet. Jerry also played autoharp, I think 1962 tape with Hunter. Concerning bluegrass (this was not!), Old & In The Way might have been newgrass, regardless it was the best selling "bluegrass record" ever, well, for almost 2 decades, until Allison Krauss. Jerry only played banjo on that ;-) Now don't forget the pedal steel in NRPS, and listen to GD pedal in live March/April 1972 LLRain (+studio Am Beauty and Dire Wolf etc).
Yeah really great! Bluegrass Jerry is what I truley love. Who is playing Mandolin, I know Jerry played Banjo but I don't remeber reading or hearing anything about him playing Mando...Who is it then??
Thank you so much Bilbo. Your site is a national treasure. Listen to Jerry ans Sarah is a treat I never thought I would have. Give thanks Peace and good things Joseph

Bilbo you came through with your advice. Fantastic performance! Great sound too especially for a radio show. BTW banjo was Jerry's first instrument was it not? Shows where the true roots lie for the Dead Cheers, Nate
jerrys banjo days are all so cool.

Un-freakin-believable! I hadn't even been brought into this world untill 12 years after this recording. Now I can log onto the internet and hear it FOR FREE!!! Incredible to hear the early days of it all!!! Awsome show! Un-freaking-believable!!!
to hear jerry sing "long black vail" only goes to show his love to sing a great story. he totally captures the feeling a man torn between loving and dying. he go on to record some of the best stories ever recorded or played. a true bard if i ever heard one, GBTGD!!!
This is such a rare treat, even then at such a young age, anyone can hear he was heading for that rare, special place he holds in many hearts. BTW Sara was his 1st wife and had his first baby girl, Heather. would love to hear more!!

YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
It was wonderful to remember Jerry is the first bulsh of love. And to be with him still playing the banjo. Roots and things t o come.
I had to peek a listen to this because it was right around the time I was taking guitar lessons from Jerry @ Dana Morgan's in Palo Alto. It's true, he was a musical god even back in '63. I was in a room the size of a closet with him playing guitar at the age of 13 and he'd teach me these fingerpicky tunes. - Jo D'Anna
Really Great Selection of Songs!!!
so authentic and raw. even in 1963 jerry was a musical god.
Truly a gem of a show. --Mark Star--
Jerry met David at Sunset Park in Pennsylvania to see Bill Monroe in 1964.

This is truly amazing. How about the precision of the performances? Incredible. And, yes, that is Jerry speaking authentic Folk-ese in the stage banter. I guess the acid tests did away with all that.
a great peice of history! Sound is great.
GREAT SOUND - GOOD TUNES. DO I DETECT GRISMAN IN THERE SOMEWHERE? -- DOLAN
Too good to be true. I can't believe my ears.
Wheeew! Killer...Killer....Killer! Did ya get that? KILLER!
